RI Student Exchange Program - VIRTUAL MEETING
Jan 06, 2022 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Susan V. Brodbeck
Rotary Club of Lake Houston Area

Susan Brodbeck is retired from a buying and merchandising career of 31 years in May Co. Department Stores in Indianapolis and at Foley’s in Houston.

Susan graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri with an Associate of Arts Degree in Business and Retailing and then from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing.  After graduating she was a buyer and a merchandise manager for L. S. Ayres Department Stores in Indianapolis, Indiana for 24 years.  In 1992, as a result of a merger, Susan moved to Houston as the Ladies Coat Buyer for Foley’s.  Now, ask yourself...how is anyone successful at selling coats in Texas??  But, during her 9 years at Foley’s Susan earned “Buyer of the Year” 2 times.

She has been a member of Rotary since February 2007 and currently serves as the Rotary Youth Exchange Officer for the Lake Houston Area Club.  During her tenure she has coordinated 26 Inbound and 65 Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Students.  She also serves as the liaison for the many wonderful Host Families who have hosted the Inbound Rotary Exchange Students from around the globe.  She has also served on the District 5890 Rotary Youth Exchange Committee.  Additionally, Susan served as President of The Rotary Club of Humble in 2014-15.  Organizing and planning are two things Susan really likes to do.

On a personal note, Susan, enjoys year-round golf at the Clubs of Kingwood.  Staying in touch with old friends and making new ones.  It has become a hobby for Susan; she says...  “Some people collect coins, I like to collect friends.”

Susan enjoys her membership in The Rotary Club of Lake Houston Area as it has opened avenues of opportunity for humanitarian service and camaraderie with like–minded professionals and associates and, the ability to keep current with what’s happening locally and nationally and as well as  globally.  Susan will tell you through involvement in Rotary Youth Exchange there is something to do every day to give a student somewhere in the world a “leg up” in life!

Julian Ramirez, Attorney
Feb 24, 2022 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Native Texan Julian Ramirez, 58, is a licensed attorney who has worked in the Harris County criminal courts for more than 32 years. A second-generation U. S. citizen, Julian’s story epitomizes the American Dream.

Julian’s great-grandfather was recruited to the U. S. from Mexico in 1908 to help build railroads. The move ensured a better life and security for his family and generations to follow. Julian’s grandparents became sharecroppers, raising their children on a Fort Bend County farm during the Great Depression. Like many Mexican Americans of the time, his parents attained only a grade school education. However, the value of an education coupled with hard work was not lost on his parents. They raised seven children in a two-bedroom house without air conditioning “across the tracks” on Rosenberg’s working-class north side. They faithfully attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Church every Sunday and made sure each of their seven children graduated from high school and attended college.

Growing up, Julian and his siblings stocked shelves and worked the cash register in the small family grocery store to help support the family. The experience taught him the value hard work and the importance of providing a service to the community.

Julian received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 and his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1989 from the University of Texas at Austin. Julian’s dedication to public service led him to a 27-year career at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Julian prosecuted thousands of felony cases and tried more than 150 first chair jury trials for crimes ranging from death penalty capital murders to DWI’s. He was promoted to chief felony prosecutor in 1994, managing large dockets of felony cases, and division chief in 2007. He has overseen multiple felony courts, the public corruption unit, and the civil rights division. He has also handled many gang cases, high-profile matters, and complex investigations.

His retirement from the DA’s Office in December 2016 was a short one. When the current DA recused her office from handling hundreds of cases, district court judges appointed Julian to prosecute more than 50 of them. He has continued to try violent crime cases, including capital murder and murder, to guilty verdicts.

Julian has been asked many times to share his expertise by teaching police officers at the Houston Police Academy and prosecutors at the DA’s Office and across the state. Julian has taught thousands of police and prosecutors on various criminal and investigative topics.

Julian is active in the Memorial Park 1st Ward congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and his son’s boy scout troop. He lives in Houston with his wife, Caroline Dozier, their 13-year-old son, and their two dogs.

Memorial Service for Ted Hirtz
Mar 05, 2022 2:00 PM
Memorial Service
Saturday, March 5, 2022 @ 2 p.m.
Location: Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston TX 77002.

Ted Hirtz was born 6 March 1936 to Viola Stamer Hirtz and Theodore S. Hirtz, Sr. in St. Louis, MO; called to the Bar in Austin, Texas, December 1963; and headed into the sunset 21 February 2022 from his home in Houston, Texas.
At age 9, Ted’s father’s covered wagon headed east to New York, to the corporate offices of Brown Shoe Company. Ted developed a love of learning at Scarsdale High School, which prepared him to study Roman and Greek history at Harvard University, graduating in 1958. When the Hungarian Revolution began, Ted and others on the Harvard crew enlisted in the USMC; he was a reservist for 6 years.
He met his first wife, Nancy Jane Coleman, on board The S.S. United States liner while travelling with his parents and sister, Joyce. Ted and Nancy married and moved to Stanford University, where Ted studied law, graduating in 1963.  Son Stewart was born in California, Henry in NYC, and Will in Houston as Ted began his practice of law. He was an Assistant District Attorney with Harris County before practicing with Childress, Port & Crady; with Ed McDonough; and then on his own.
Ted never feared representing the underdog against great odds. He loved Texas and wanted to establish law regarding her eroding coastline. He served on the Historical and Law Library Committees of the Houston Bar Association. Known as the “lawyer who always wore a hat”, he retired at age 85 and worked full days until he was hospitalized with metastatic kidney cancer.
Ted and Susan Elaine Akers met in the courtyard of Christ Church Cathedral; they married 12 June 1986. Susan and Ted enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Houston Club and the Petroleum Club. They would take off to explore the corners of the world, wandering the market in Kashgar, China; climbing Ayers Rock in Australia; chartering boats to view Komodo dragons and the orangutans in Borneo; and riding camels through Petra and over the Saharan sands of Morocco (when Ted was age 83).
Ted relished riding the Ranchers’ Ride and Salt Grass Trail with his sons and older grandchildren as well as hunting dove and quail. He would phone Henry most mornings to read the daily scriptures. In 53 years, Ted rarely missed a Tuesday singing with the Houston Saengerbund. Ted was a member of the Tax Forum, Rotary Club of Houston, and the Old Lions. He was a 50+ year member with Holland Lodge No. 1 and served on the Board of the Battleship Texas Foundation. He served as president of the English-Speaking Union and as chieftain of the Heather & Thistle Society. He enjoyed studying the poetry of Robert Burns with friends in Houston, Canada and Scotland. Ted and Susan worshiped at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church and at Christ Church Cathedral.
He is survived by Susan, his loving wife of 35 years; sons Stewart Cochran (Lana) Hirtz, Henry Theodore (Amy) Hirtz, and William August (Krissy) Hirtz; grandchildren, Ian Stewart Coleman Hirtz, Margaret Elizabeth Hirtz, William Coleman Hirtz, Shepherd August Hirtz, Helton Ronald Hirtz, and Levi Cochran Hirtz; his sister, Joyce Ann Hirtz Davis and her husband, Steve Ilsley Davis, of Vero Beach, Florida; and his former daughter-in-law, Diane Hirtz Spencer.
Services will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, March 5, at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston TX 77002.  The Hirtz family requests that attendees wear masks. The service will be live-streamed at https://www.christchurchcathedral.org/hirtzmemorial

BETIRRI BENGTSON

Born in Puebla, Mexico in 1982, Betirri is a local artist in Houston, Texas, internationally recognized primarily by a series of paintings depicting bodiless sport figures in motion.

His work ranges from figurative to conceptual always expressing the essence of an idea or subject.

He is also the official artist of the Houston Lamborghini Festival since 2014.

Some of his clients include Reebok Brazil, Major League Soccer, NFL & Lone Star Sports & Entertainment. His work has been published and featured in magazines and newspapers in Italy, Romania, Brazil, United States, and Mexico.

His exhibit trajectory includes solo shows in Puebla in Mexico, Vancouver in Canada, Moscow in Russia, Houston in the US, and art fairs in Milan, Italy, and Miami Basel. Currently, twelve of Betirri's paintings are part of an international tour called 'Ball in Art' which is organized by a Russian Foundation that started in Moscow in 2018 and touring East Europe and Asia countries until 2022. The exhibit is formed of different artists around the world who paint the subject of football and it will be presented in Qatar during the 2022 World Cup.

Betirri's background is in architecture. He has used his skills in the development of a themed park proposed in East Downtown, Houston. Named Goal Park, it will be the enhancement of the Columbia Tap Trail using it as a platform for the community to practice public health and enjoy public art. This has been a volunteered work since 2015.

Betirri has practiced art professionally since 2012 as an independent artist sustaining one hundred percent from commissions and the sell of his paintings and drawings.

STATEMENT

Sports and a healthy lifestyle play an important role in society in any country. Sports are a way of identity for many. Sports keep us in constant motion, motivated, inspired, and alive. Sports are full of emotions and discipline, just like art. When I was a kid, I wanted to become a professional football (soccer) player, but my asthma condition didn't let me go further as I wished. However, art was the only path to stay as close to the sports as an athlete or manager. Although I admire certain athletes, I believe more in the team effort of most sports. I create timeless masterpieces that express that team effort through a bodiless figure in motion.

My mission as an artist is to reflect the impact that sports have in our society by different visual creative outlets such as painting, muralism and graphics.

- Betirri

We are constantly inviting sponsors to help underwrite the costs associated with camp and the scholarships we award. It is imperative that we, The Rotary Club of Houston, continue our longstanding tradition of providing this lifechanging experience at no cost to the individual students.

All scholarships are named after the donor who contributed the tax-deductible donation to the Houston Rotary Foundation (501c3).

6 breakout rooms (where students collaborate on their strategies for the business simulation) are eligible for sponsorship and branding by any individual or organization interested.

T-shirts are marked with logos of sponsoring individuals and companies.

All donations are welcomed, and every donor is invited to come share lunch with us on the Saturday of camp to see what their investment in the future looks like.

Henry deForest Ralph, Jr. - Memorial Service
Apr 09, 2022 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Henry deForest Ralph, Jr.
1933-2022

Send Flowers

Henry deForest Ralph, Jr., age 88, passed away on January 25, 2022, after a sudden, brief illness. "deForest" is survived by his two sons and their wives and children: Forest III, Felicia, Carolyn, Emily, and Noah Ralph; Randal William, Catherine, Austin, and Brooks Ralph; sister Elizabeth Ralph Mertz; sisters-in-law Ruth Page Lawrence and Susan Page; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

deForest was born at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC on April 11, 1933, the second of three children of Dorothy Walker and Henry deForest Ralph. (Coincidentally, both his sons would obtain their undergraduate degrees at GU, taking classes in the same, converted old hospital building.) When he was fourteen, he was struck by rheumatic fever and appendicitis. To convalesce, he spent a year in Madeira Beach, FL where his grandfather, the Rev. Philip Ralph, had founded, and was the first minister of, the Church by the Sea. After his return to DC, the Ralph family moved to Tulsa, OK, which is where deForest met his wife-to-be, Martha Austine Page. They graduated together from Tulsa Central High School in 1951.

deForest studied Chemical Engineering at The Rice Institute, earning his B.A. and B.S. in 1955 and 1956, respectively. He and Martha were married while he was in school, the ceremony conducted by his grandfather at Martha's "airconditioned" Tulsa home on July 24, 1954. Upon his graduation, the couple moved to El Paso, TX, the city where their two sons were born. While there, deForest began his career as a refinery engineer for Standard Oil of Texas (Chevron). The couple returned to Houston in 1961, where they made their permanent home and raised their boys.

deForest would work for a handful of companies over the next 22 years: Trunkline Gas, Panhandle Eastern, the Pace Company, and Gulf Interstate. His longest stint was at Coastal States (Coal and Chemical Division), where he served as Vice President(s) of Economics and Planning and Wycon Chemical Company. In the mid-1980s, he formed his own consulting business and was co-editor of a local natural gas newsletter.

deForest loved Houston and embraced the Texas culture and ethos. He played roles in his sons' extracurricular activities, including Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, and Willow Creek Little League baseball. He got involved with Amigos de las America, his son Forest's later interest. He was active in the Houston Vintage Radio Association, inspired by his connection to his great uncle, Lee de Forest, one of America's early pioneer inventors in radio. deForest had a signature saying - "over and out" - when wrapping up a phone message.

deForest was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Houston, a recipient of their Honorary Emeritus Life Member award, and was a Paul Harris Fellow multiple times. He spent many years volunteering for literacy and ESL programs at HISD elementary schools, including Tijerina and Golfcrest.

deForest was forever active with all things Rice: athletics, music, and academics. He loved the School of Engineering, and was President of the Alumni group REA in the 1980's. He established an annual scholarship prize to encourage Rice students to bring their engineering skills to bear on solving society's problems, naming it in honor of "Bob" Dickson, his roommate who died tragically in 1953 while on a Navy ROTC flight.

Lastly, deForest worshipped at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church, serving in various lay leadership capacities over the years. His most fulfilling role was leading Emerson's involvement in their Partner Church program, firmly establishing a bond with Gregory St. Nickolas Church of Transylvania (Romania).

A few years after Martha's passing on August 5, 2012, deForest moved to the Brookdale Galleria Senior Living Facility. He enjoyed his Brookdale friends and was very fond of the staff. He served two terms as Chairman of the Resident Council, assumed various other leadership positions, and was an unofficial host of the weekly happy hours.

His sons give thanks to Tracy Ahrens, Brookdale's Director of Resident Programs, and all the various medical professionals who cared for deForest over the years, with special recognition to Dr. Stuart Solomon and the cardiology staff at Methodist Hospital.

A memorial service to celebrate deForest's life will be held at 2:00pm, on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1900 Bering Drive, Houston, TX 77057. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution be directed to the R.K.M. "Bob" Dickson Prize at Rice University, Office of Development MS-81, PO Box 1892, Houston, TX 77251, or at giving.rice.edu.

HEARTS for Children CPS Adoption Fair
Apr 23, 2022 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

HEARTS for Children CPS Adoption Fair is a Rotary Community Corp created by The Rotary Club of Houston.

We are looking for 15 volunteers to help with the event.  Volunteers should arrive no later than 9:15 AM.  No children under the age of 18 are allowed to volunteer at this event.

At the event prospective adoptive parents with approved home studies mingle with children between the ages of 5 and 17 who are in the custody of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services- Children’s Protective Services Division and looking for their forever family.  Through the generosity of the Rotary Club of Houston the children and prospective adoptive parents get to know each other in a fun-filled relaxed environment with interactive games, photo booth,  a visit from the Texan’s mascot, service dog, Microsoft station,  DJ and lunch.

Club members arrive at 9 a.m. to set up games/crafts, etc. When children we all relax playing the games. Vetted adoptive parents arrive later and take our placs with the children. Since we began this program there have been over 70 successful adoptions from first meetings at Hearts for Children Adoption Fair.

Some special guests usually include TORO, Texans Mascot, Dixie, our favorite Therapy Dog, a DJ, and Microsofts traveling game corner.

Voting: a privilege or a right?
May 26, 2022 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Chris Hollins has shown what local government can achieve when new ideas and accountable leadership are met with real purpose.

Chris led the 2020 elections effort in Harris County as County Clerk and gained national acclaim for protecting and expanding voting rights for 2.5 million Houston-area voters during the most important election in our lifetime. His innovations – which included drive-thru voting, 24-hour voting, online mail ballot tracking, and tripling the number of early voting centers–led to eye-popping record voter turnout despite the ongoing global pandemic.

Chris developed a commitment to public service through the selfless example of his parents and their devotion for improving the lives of others. His father, George, served for 34 years in the Houston Police Department, and his mother, Christie, managed a career as an administrative assistant while raising Chris, his two sisters, and more than 20 young foster children. Chris has served as a mentor to youth for over 20 years and has been a Big Brother for over a decade.

Today, Chris serves as a volunteer member of the METRO Board of Directors, where he is helping to oversee METRO's $1.3 billion budget, shaping its $7 billion expansion plan, and leading its full transition to renewable fuels by 2030.

He is active in his church and civic club, and he serves on the boards of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston and the East Downtown TIRZ (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone).

Chris has worked at some of the world’s most distinguished professional service firms. As a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, he pioneered strategies for large government agencies–in public safety, defense, and security – and assisted multinational companies in improving results for the people they serve.

Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Morehouse College. Chris also completed a joint program with Yale Law School and Harvard Business School, earning both his Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees.
Chris is admitted to the State Bar of Texas and Federal Courts for the Southern District of Texas. He is currently in private practice as the Principal Attorney at Hollins Law Group PLLC.

Chris and his wife Morgan live in Houston’s Third Ward with their daughter Vivian and their son George. The Hollins family attends Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

Front Line Kid - Bucky Ribbeck
Jun 02, 2022 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Bucky Ribbeck is a board certified pediatrician currently training as a fellow in sports medicine at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital.  Bucky's introduction to the medical field was as a patient in 2009 when he was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer).  He was treated with chemotherapy at Texas Children's and with a surgery to remove the tumor at MD Anderson.  While he was a patient, Bucky was invited to be a Front Line Kid at the Rotary Lombardi Award, and he was further honored to have presented the award and spoken at following events.  He is a living and breathing example of the benefits of cancer research, and he hopes to be an example for how people can make the best out of any poor situation with which they are faced.  That is what has kept Bucky involved with volunteer organizations such as The Periwinkle Foundation, The Snowdrop Foundation, and The Rotary Club: all of which provide a great deal of hope and charity for those affected by cancer.
